La fête du Muguet(Travail) or May Day,(also known as International Workers’ Day) in English is a day where everyone doesn’t work! Yet, in the States, you do work? What is May Day and why was it invented. How is it in France?
La Fête du Muguet, La Fête du Travail
This day is used to campaign for and celebrate workers rights. It is also an occasion to present lily-of-the-valley or dog rose flowers to loved ones.
How is it in France?
No one works! (except some restaurants and fast food places.) This day is used to campaign for and celebrate workers rights. Along with bringing a loved one flowers not just any flower but lily-of-the-valley or dog rose flowers. Why is it also called La Fête du Muguet. It is in commemoration of a young girl who was killed in the tragedy that happened in the village of Fourmis, May 1891, during the annual protests of May 1st, who wore a white dress and had held flowers. Now the Muguet or Lily of the valley is used to represent spring and happiness.
What is it?
The commemoration of the achievements of the labor movement is now commonly known as May Day.The holiday may also be known as Labour Day or International Worker’s Day and is marked with a public holiday in over 80 countries.
Why was it invented?
The 1st of May is used because in 1884 the American Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions demanded an eight-hour workday, that came in effect as of 1 May 1886. This resulted in the general strike and the Haymarket Riot of 1886, but eventually also in the official sanction of the eight-hour workday.
Why is it not celebrated in The US?
Actually, it is! It is just on a different day it is that one day we know and love, labor day.Where we all barbecue.Given the origin of the May 1st, the United States celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday of September (1 May is Loyalty Day, a legal but not widely recognized holiday in the United States). There is some suggestion that the reason for this was to avoid the commemoration of riots that had occurred in 1886. May Day has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various communist, socialist, and anarchist groups.
So, why not go give a flower to a loved one on this special day instead of disregarding it as “just a Monday.”
